A mural is a big investment, how long can it last?

Murals are a big investment. If you hire an artist to paint it for you, the price will include his or her knowledge and prestige. If you paint it yourself, it will cost you less money, but a lot of time.
Artists usually prepare the wall and prime it and they make sure their “canvas” is going to be suitable for their work. The use the highest quality paints and they will make sure it will last for many years.
A good quality mural can last for ever, you have heard from murals painted during the renaissance, the middle ages and even before that in Rome. Cave paintings are murals that have lasted for thousands of years.
So probably, your mural is going to be there when your child has outgrown it, or when you sell your house.
If you are going to paint it yourself, you should plan and prime your wall accordingly, and do it the same way an artist would do it. If you take all the time to take care of every detail, you will probably end with a much more beautiful mural and it will last for many years.
The worst enemy of a mural is water. If the drywall gets wet, your mural is going to be ruined. So you have to make sure that your wall wont get wet at any time.
It can also suffer from scratches and dirt, but those are easier to retouch. Glossy paint is easier to clean, but is not as beautiful, you might choose a satin paint instead. Never try to clean a mural in the first weeks after it was painted, wait at least a month before you try and use a wet cloth.
