Mixing colors to paint a mural can be a challenge if you are not an artist. You do not need to buy every single color you are going to use in the mural; because you can mix your own colors and get an endless amount of new shades and tones.
They are some simple rules that can help you to avoid wasting time and paint:
Buy the primary colors: pure red, yellow and blue, plus white and black. To get orange, mix yellow and red. To get purple, mix red and blue. To get green, mix yellow and blue. To mix lighter shades add white. Never use black to darken a color, use the opposite color, because black tend to make the color dirty.
Try to prepare a little more of what you think you are going to need. Find the exactly same tone is very difficult.
Use small containers with caps to avoid your paint will get dry while you are not using it.
For small quantities, use a plastic egg box, it is an excellent palette and you can close it when not in use.
Add the dark color to the light one. It takes just a little amount of dark paint to darken a color, but it takes a lot of lighter paint to change the dark one. To prepare pink, start with white and add a small amount of red. To prepare orange, start with yellow and add some red to it.
Add opaque paint to transparent. The opaque paint has a greater strength than the transparent paints.
Prepare the browns mixing the complementary colors: red and green, yellow and purple, and blue and orange.
