The paint sheen can make a great difference in the overall appearance of your child’s room. It is not only about how it looks, but also about its maintenance.
The paint sheen affects how you perceive the colors, the same color can look lighter or darker if the paint is prepared with a different sheen. The sheen is how shiny the paint will look when it is dry. Different manufactures use different names to label their paints, but most of them have 4 categories.
Flat paint:
It has a matte finish, it is non-reflective and it is the best type of paint to cover imperfections. It covers very well with just a couple of coats. It is very good to paint a large ceiling. Even though it is washable, it gets stained very easily, and it is susceptible to damage in humidity and water. It is not the best paint for kids, because they will be putting their little hands in the walls all the time.
Eggshell or satin:
These paints have more sheen than the flat one, and the have the warmth without being to shiny. They are ideal for children’s rooms because not only they have better stain resistance than flat paints, but also because you can scrub them vigorously, and the paint will not come off.
Semi-gloss paint:
It has more sheen, it is more stain resistance, and it is easier to clean. But for my taste it is too shiny and reflective for a child’s room. It is a very good choice to paint the bathroom, and if you are painting a mural in you kids bathroom, this is the perfect choice.
Gloss paint:
It is really shiny and it has a very plastic look.
